Plassenburg, Kulmbach, Germany
These photos were taken by myself, Andrew Finch, on a visit to the Lead Figure Museum at the Plassenburg Castle museum in Kulmbach, which is in the north of the German State of Bavaria. TWWS had an indirect connection with this museum way back at the outset because one of our members, Hugh Taylor, was a regular attendee at the annual meeting, held at the Plassenburg, of collectors of the original "toy soldiers", which were in fact what is termed "flats". Hugh had a large collection of such figures and it always fascinated me that the two dimensional model could be rendered into three dimensions by clever painting.
It had always been an ambition of mine to get to this museum, and I finally succeeded while I was on holiday in the area in 2014. The museum has a lot of information about the creation of flat figures and there are thousands of figures in many display cases, some of which I am putting here in our photo gallery. There are extensive dioramas of battles and as you can see the way they are presented certainly deceives the eye.
